COST & VALUE OF OUR POLICE
Strathmoor Police Department 2nd
flr Republic Bank
3 officers: Chief Renzi, Sgt. Barrow, Officer Petra on patrol
over 100 hrs/wk,
more than 5,200 hrs/yr in the 3
cities of
Strathmoor Village,
Strathmoor Manor & Kingsley
Anytime you need the
SPD, 432-8900 connects
to the cell phone for officer on duty then goes to Sheriff's
dispatch if SPD doesn't answer quickly. Dispatch contacts SPD or
sends LMPD.
The reason we
can afford our own community police department is because the
cost of police services is shared. It would translate into $20.68 per
patrol hour. If we
didn't have our own PD, we would pay LMPD to patrol (LMPD
does not patrol now); their rate is $45.00/hr. (fewer hours for
us, no random patrols as SPD does, no house checks, no ordinance
enforcement).
Another comparison is
tax rates: Metro residents pay for police patrol services along with
fire protection and garbage pickup with a higher tax rate than we
have. The
additional rate for Metro services this year would be .3666
cents if added to our County tax bill versus paying SV .33
cents.
Mayor
Bell
is retired Metro FD, not a supporter of our police but many
residents are. You'll quickly
learn how glad the other cities are to have the Chief Renzi and
SPD if you attend their monthly
meetings. We are not the same department we were in previous years
or even in early 2007 thanks to former Chief Jeff Carter &
now our current Chief Joe Renzi (28-year veteran police
chief who came to us from the Graymoor-Devondale Police
Dept.)
